Attention Teachers! The deadline for applications for this year's weather grants from the National Weather Association is Aug 1.  You can apply for one of the grants by writing to the address below or printing out a form using the link below.  Please note: The weather grants are administered by the National Weather Assocation, not by the Weather Dude web site.  You will need to contact the NWA at the address below.

NWA Sol Hirsch Education Fund Grant Application Form

The following information is reprinted from the National Weather Assocation:

NWA SOL HIRSCH EDUCATION FUND GRANTS

The NWA Education Committee needs help from all members to spread the word to teachers in grades K-12 that $500 grants are available annually from the NWA to help improve the education of their students in meteorology. The teachers selected will be able to use the funds to take an accredited course in atmospheric sciences, attend a relevant workshop or conference, or purchase scientific materials or equipment for the classroom. Three grants or more are possible in 2001 thanks to the many members who have contributed to this fund in honor of Sol Hirsch who retired in 1992 after being the NWA Executive Director for 11 years.

Applications can be obtained from the NWA Education Committee, 3809 Clarks Lane Suite 007, Baltimore MD 21215, from the NWA office or the NWA Web site (www.nwas.org). Completed applications are due to the Education Committee by August 1st.

PROPOSAL GUIDELINES:

Grant for equipment and supplies - Specify the equipment, materials and supplies required and how they will be used to enhance class study of weather (atmospheric sciences). How many students and faculty will be involved? Will this project be part of an ongoing effort, a new project or have partial funding from another source?

Grant for Individual Scholarship for courses or conference attendance - Specify how the proposed course work, seminar participation, meeting attendance or other instructional activity will benefit recipient in teaching weather (atmospheric sciences) to students.

EACH PROPOSAL MUST INCLUDE:

Proposal Cover Form - Please use the application form below.

Proposal Description - Provide a thorough description of activities in the project. If applying for individual scholarship, describe the course or conference activity. Include the details of how the money will be spent. The awards committee will place a high value on the creativity and expected impact of the project/scholarship.

Proposal Rationale - Explain the need for such a project or scholarship as well as the potential benefits.

Proposal Length - Please limit length of the proposal description and rationale to no more than two double-spaced typed pages.

Winners will be announced at the NWA Annual Meeting in October. Awards will be sent to the selected teachers/schools soon thereafter.
